Adx Rsi Trading Strategy

The ADX indicator measures the strength of a trend through its ADX line, while the Relative Strength Index (RSI) reads the market for overbought and oversold conditions. Each one is useful on its own, but pairing them in a single approach — an ADX and RSI strategy — gives you a clearer picture of both trend strength and momentum at the same time.

What the ADX and RSI strategy needs

As the name suggests, this strategy uses two technical indicators: ADX and RSI, each kept on its default settings.

Timeframe for the ADX and RSI strategy

This is a scalping strategy, so the timeframe we use is the 15-minute chart.

How the ADX and RSI strategy works

We’ll break the strategy into steps so it’s easy to follow and apply.

1- Wait for the +DI line to cross above the -DI line on the ADX

When the +DI line crosses above the -DI line, it points to an uptrend; when the two lines cross to the downside, it points to a downtrend. See the chart below.

Keep in mind that ADX is a trend indicator. You can also read: ADX indicator explained and its best settings for trading.

2- Also wait for the ADX line to rise above 25

You can gauge the strength of the current trend by looking at the ADX line. If it is above 25 (the red horizontal line), the current trend is strong and you can consider taking a trade. If it is below 25, the trend is weak and taking a trade is not advised. See the chart below.

Remember that the ADX line crossing above 25 is a key condition — a cross between the +DI and -DI lines alone is not enough. We want to avoid entering weak trends.

3- Enter a sell trade after confirming that the RSI has moved above 30

Make sure the RSI has moved above 30, and don’t consider entering a buy trade while the RSI is oversold, because that condition can last a while. See the chart below.

In the chart above, you’ll notice the RSI has moved above 30 and was no longer in an overbought or oversold state.

4- Set the stop-loss

For a buy, the stop-loss sits at the lowest level the price reached; for a sell, it sits at the highest level the price reached. See the chart below.

5- Set the take-profit

Take profit when the price reaches an overbought or oversold reading on the RSI, followed by the ADX line dropping below 25. Those two signals are enough to exit and help you avoid a reversal.

Note: the steps above are an example for buy trades. Apply the same rules for sell trades, but in the opposite direction.

In the ADX strategy, price is the most important signal on the chart, so read the price first, then read the ADX line to understand what the price is doing.

When you use the ADX strategy, it should add something that price alone can’t easily tell you. The strongest trends tend to appear after periods of a sideways price range, and breakouts from that range happen when buyers and sellers disagree on price. That shifts the balance of supply and demand; whether supply outweighs demand or the other way around, it is the difference that creates momentum for the price.

Breakouts aren’t hard to spot, but they often fail to follow through or turn out to be false. The ADX indicator can signal when a breakout is more likely to hold by showing when ADX is strong enough to back the price direction after the breakout: when ADX rises from below 25 to above 25, the price has enough strength to continue in the breakout direction. Signals like these can still fail, so manage your risk.
