Forex Trading Strategies Overview

The forex market is the largest financial market in the world, and it is full of different types of traders who buy and sell currencies. Trading is carried out using a range of strategies and techniques while forecasting or speculating, with the help of many programs and platforms that make trading activity easier.

Currency values tend to rise or fall because of several factors, including geopolitics and the economy. The aim of forex trading is to profit from changes in a currency, but traders need a good grasp of trading strategies; otherwise it becomes hard for them to make a profit. When a trader knows online forex trading strategies well, they can take a smarter approach to the market.

Scalping strategy in forex

Scalping is one of the most common short-term trading strategies. Scalpers keep positions open for only seconds, or a few minutes at most. These trades target small price moves during the day. The purpose is to place many quick trades with smaller gains, letting profits build up over the day through the large number of trades executed in each session.

This style of trading needs tight spreads and liquid markets. As a result, scalpers tend to trade only the major currency pairs because of their liquidity and high trading volume, such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD and JPY/USD.

They also tend to trade during the busiest hours of the trading day. When sessions overlap, trading volume is high and volatility often occurs. Scalpers always look for the lowest possible spreads, simply because they enter the market frequently, and wide spreads eat into potential profits.

The fast-paced setting of trying to earn a few pips as many times as possible can be tiring for many traders and very time-consuming. It also requires watching the charts for several hours at a time alongside intense speculation, so scalpers tend to trade just one or two currency pairs.

Day trading in forex

For those who are not comfortable with scalping but do not want to hold trades overnight, day trading may suit them.

Day traders enter and exit their positions on the same day, which removes the risk of any large overnight moves, because they close their position either at a profit or a loss by the end of the day. Trades are usually held for minutes or hours, so you have enough time to analyse the markets and monitor positions repeatedly throughout the day. Day traders also rely on small, frequent gains to make a profit.

Traders pay particular attention to fundamental and technical analysis, using technical indicators such as the MACD, the Relative Strength Index and the Stochastic indicator, to help identify trends and market conditions.

Swing strategy in forex

Unlike day traders, who hold positions for less than a day, traders who use this strategy usually hold positions for several days, though sometimes they last a few weeks.

Because positions are held for longer than a single day, it is not necessary for traders to sit and watch the charts and their trades constantly throughout the day.

Position trading in forex

These traders focus on long-term price movement, looking for the maximum potential profit that can be made from major shifts in prices. As a result, trades generally extend over weeks, months or even years.

Position traders tend to use weekly and monthly price charts to analyse and assess markets, using a combination of technical indicators and fundamental analysis to identify potential entry and exit levels.

Finally, like all financial markets, there is no free money in currency trading on the forex market. Still, from my personal point of view, the simplest strategy is to expect that one currency will rise or fall in value relative to another, of course after carefully measuring and studying the direction of the trade so that you do not lose money.

Forex currency trading strategies can be manual methods, technical methods, indicators and filters, or robots that generate trading signals. Manual systems involve a trader sitting in front of a computer screen, looking for trading signals and interpreting whether they want to buy or sell.

Automated systems involve a forex trader who develops a filter, an indicator or a robot that finds trading signals and executes trades on its own. Automated systems aim to take human emotion out of the equation, though results still vary and no system removes market risk.
